Lubuntu Software Center

The Lubuntu Software Center is the software repository for the Lubuntu operating system. Software may be freely loaded and unloaded to and from the computer. Prior to this the Synaptic Package Manager was used as the repository. Starting with the next Lubuntu release, which occurs in a few weeks, Lubuntu is scheduled to ship with its own software center that is very similar to the Ubuntu Software Center. It is possible to use the Ubuntu Software Center in the Lubuntu environment if desired.

Until then Lubuntu's software center may be loaded from the terminal using the following commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:lubuntu-desktop/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install lubuntu-software-center

There is an advisory posted that the Lubuntu Software Center may have some code defects preventing it from working properly. Using the Ubuntu Software Center and the Synaptic Package Manager as software installers are solutions to this problem should they occur.

Hope all is well.

lubuntu 11.10

the lubuntu operating system is a linux variant based on ubuntu. according to documentation it can be used with machines that have lower hardware capacity. the minimum amount of ram recommended it 128 megabytes and 5 gigabytes of available hard drive capacity. the ubuntu wiki suggestes 512 megabytes of ram as a minimum. lubuntu has a small footprint and is very fast on start up. seemingly faster than ubuntu. the native machine running lubuntu has 4 GB of ram so experiences may vary based on hardware parameters. 4 gigs of ram may be overkill for a 128 meg installation.

it may be useful to keep at the forefront that the 11.10 image file may make it necessary to input "sudo start lxdm" at the command line prompt to start the installation. this is a departure from ubuntu which is a point and click install. according to wikipedia that is a glitch native to the 11.10 installation.

the ubuntu software center is accessible through lubuntu's synaptic package manager. lubuntu 12.04 is slated to have a lubuntu software center. the ubuntu software center is easy to use and has hundreds of free software titles and a few that are available for a small charge.

lubuntu's release schedule follows ubuntu's and is a recognized variant of ubuntu by canonical. noteworthy is that the 12.04 release of lubuntu will not be a long term support. ubuntu 12.04 is scheduled to be have long term support for five years.

after restart the following programs were added: ubuntu software center, libre office, bluefish web editor, xpdf reader, gimp image editor and wireless drivers.

ubuntu update

canonical released ubuntu 11.10 on october 13th 2011. after downloading the new operating system and rebooting i wanted to record some of my experience.

canonical has left out the regular gnome desktop as an option from the user account screen. it can be invoked using the terminal application. the terminal command is : sudo apt-get install gnome-panel. once the option has been enabled it is available from the login screen.

to remove the overlay scroll bars in the 11.10 version the following terminal command works great:
sudo apt-get remove overlay-scrollbar liboverlay-scrollbar3-0.2-0 liboverlay-
scrollbar-0.2-0
you may have to restart the computer for the change to take effect.

ubuntu 11.04 did not allow for saving of added wallpaper. at the advice of a fellow linux user i added an administrator account and the problem seemed to be resolved. the same issue was not present in 11.10. may have just been user error.

the new login screen that was added is very slick. it slides up and down in a fluid jquery style.

i have used slackware, mint, xubuntu, kubuntu, elementary linux and tiny core linux. ubuntu is my favorite linux distribution so far.

have a good week.
